Affiliate marketing is a form of marketing in which a business (the merchant) pays a person or company (the affiliate) for customers they send to the merchant's website. In the ecommerce world, payment is typically made to the affiliate when customers make purchases — not when they simply visit the merchant's website. The payment can either be a set fee or a percentage of the order subtotal.
Today, almost all affiliate relationships are managed through an affiliate network such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, Pepperjam, or Share-A-Sale, to name a few. These networks act as intermediaries between merchants and affiliates, helping each to find the other more easily.
